2008 Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin will appear on Thursday’s episode of “American Chopper.” The show follows the men of Orange County Choppers, the motorcycle company based out of Newburgh.

In the episode, OCC founder Paul Teutul Sr. is commissioned to Alaska to build a chopper to commemorate the state’s 50-year anniversary.

Teutul told People.com – who originally reported the story – that Palin was “a real down to earth person to talk to.”

The episode will air at 9 p.m. Thursday on TLC.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Gov. Sarah Palin’s home church was badly damaged by arson, leading the governor to apologize if the fire was connected to “undeserved negative attention” from her failed campaign as the Republican vice presidential nominee.

Damage to the Wasilla Bible Church was estimated at $1 million, authorities said Saturday. No one was injured in the fire, which was set Friday night while a handful of people, including two children, were inside, according to Central Mat-Su Fire Chief James Steele.

He said the blaze was being investigated as an arson but didn’t know of any recent threats to the church. Authorities didn’t know whether Palin’s connection to the church was relevant to the fire, Steele said.

“It’s hard to say at this point. Everything is just speculation,” he said. “We have no information on intent or motive.”

Steele would not comment on the means used to set the fire.

Pastor Larry Kroon declined to say whether the church had received any recent threats.

“There are so many variables,” he said. “I don’t want to comment in that direction.”

Palin stops by the church
Palin, who was not at the church at the time of the fire, stopped by Saturday. Her spokesman, Bill McAllister, said in a statement that Palin told an assistant pastor she was sorry if the fire was connected to the “undeserved negative attention” the church has received since she became the vice presidential candidate Aug. 29.

“Whatever the motives of the arsonist, the governor has faith in the scriptural passage that what was intended for evil will in some way be used for good,” McAllister said.

The 1,000-member evangelical church was the subject of intense scrutiny after Palin was named John McCain’s running mate. Early in Palin’s campaign, the church was criticized for promoting in a Sunday bulletin a Focus on the Family “Love Won Out Conference” in Anchorage. The conference promised to “help men and women dissatisfied with living homosexually understand that same-sex attractions can be overcome.”

The fire was set at the entrance of the church and moved inward as a small group of women were working on crafts, Steele said. The group was alerted to the blaze by a fire alarm.

Outside temperatures were minus 20 as firefighters battled the blaze.

Steele said a multi-agency task force was being assembled to investigate the fire.

Wasilla, the governor’s hometown, is 40 miles north of Anchorage.

Arriving home in Alaska, she denied she was a diva and hit back, calling her critics inside the campaign “cowardly” for attacking her anonymously.

“That’s cruel and it’s mean-spirited; it’s immature, it’s unprofessional and those guys are jerks,” she said. “It is not fair and not right.”

As for the allegations of wild spending, she insisted: “I never asked for anything more than a Diet Dr Pepper [drink] once in a while.”

Palin has retained a huge fan base of voters who are convinced that the steely former beauty queen with a pregnant teenage daughter and appealing Down’s syndrome baby is just like them.

They are unfazed by the revelation that she thought Africa was a country. Unlike her, however, they might have realised that a telephone call from President Nicolas Sarkozy of France was probably a prank. Palin told the fake Sarkozy – in reality a Canadian radio DJ – before last week’s defeat that she might run for president.

Intimates confirm that after her 15 minutes of global fame she has become addicted to the spotlight. Judy Patrick, a close friend and former councillor in Wasilla, Palin’s home town, said: “We’d have to be delusional to think that she’s just going to come back here and live in obscurity and stay the governor of Alaska.”

There have been reports that Palin could become a chat show host – as Tina Fey, the comedian and Palin impersonator, pointed out on Saturday Night Live, the satirical television show.

“I’m certainly not goin’ back to Alaska,” Fey-as-Palin chirped. “If I’m not goin’ to the White House, I’m either runnin’ in four years’ time or I’m goin’ to be a white Oprah, so, you know, I’m good either way.”

It makes reports of the internal spats in the McCain camp all the more damaging as Senator McCain looks to ride the race home with a consistent message focusing on Senator Obama’s relative lack of experience and a left-liberal economic agenda.

But reports indicate Ms Palin may continue to make headlines in the final days of the campaign as she appears increasingly willing to disregard advisers’ orders and speak out on her own.

Politico reported the Alaska Governor’s supporters were accusing McCain campaign strategists of already attempting to pin the blame on Ms Palin for the failure of the campaign.

It later quoted advisers to Senator McCain reacting angrily to the report, branding Ms Palin a “diva”. The McCain sources said Ms Palin had repeatedly gone “off-message” recently, suggesting she appeared to be looking out for herself.

Ms Palin has also been taking some heat over the $US150,000 ($220,000) spent on her wardrobe since late August, undermining her appeal as a down-to-earth working “hockey mum”.

Campaigning in Iowa yesterday, noting the chill in the air, she said: “It reminded me a lot of Alaska, so I put my warm jacket on, and it is my own jacket. It doesn’t belong to anybody else.”

Why are they trying to get ads taken off the air that they don’t like? Why are they outspending McCain several fold in most markets? Why is Obama purchasing 30 minute blocks of prime time television on major networks?

Why are they registering thousands of people, both real and imaginary, who are not eligible (or in some cases even alive) to vote? Why is the media going all out to destroy anyone that might possibly stand in Obama’s way and to ignore any story that might show him in a bad light? Why are the media throwing away their last shreds of integrity, honesty and impartiality by going so far in the tank for Obama?

Don’t they know the financial crisis combined with Bush’s unpopularity created an atmosphere in which their victory is almost guaranteed? Don’t they know they are leading in all the battleground states now? Don’t they know the transition team is already meeting and the party is already planned? They are behaving like the only way they can win is through intimidation, lying, fraud, and throwing more money into the race than in the history of American politics and every time I think they have done all they can do, they go that extra mile.

Maybe they know something we don’t? Maybe the polls really are narrowing more than they expected? Or maybe the prospect of the most extreme liberal government in American history led by Obama-Pelosi-Reid, is just something too important to be left to an election free from fraud, intimidation and extreme media bias.

In his first interview since his romance and pregnancy with Palin’s daughter, Bristol, 17, almost overnight made him a topic in the presidential campaign, Levi Johnston, 18, yesterday held forth on fatherhood and relationships.

“I’m looking forward to having him,” Johnston told the Associated Press in an interview conducted outside his home in Wasilla, Alaska.

“I’m going to take him hunting and fishing. He’ll be everywhere with me,” Johnston said.

Johnson, an avid hunter who spoke to the AP from a front yard strewn with caribou and elk antlers, did not discuss baby names.

He also said he liked Barack Obama, although he hoped his future mother-in-law’s campaign was successful. However Johnston will not be called upon to put his loyalties to the test in this election. He apparently did not register in time to vote, according to the local elections office.

The Palin-Johnson baby is due on December 18, the most high profile teenage pregnancy in America.

Its disclosure, after Palin emerged as the surprising pick for the vice-presidential nomination and on the eve of the Republican convention in September, briefly turned Johnston from a hockey playing local heart throb and high school drop out into a minor celebrity.

Given Palin’s sudden celebrity and her well-known evangelical leanings, including opposition to sex education and abortion, the pregnancy became immediate tabloid fodder.

Johnston was caught up in the swirl. He was on the tarmac to welcome John McCain when the Republican presidential nominee arrived at the convention in St Paul. McCain made a point of lingering with the couple, and Johnston was hauled out in front of tens of thousands of Republican activists when Palin delivered her speech.

Johnston’s Facebook page, in which he claimed to be a redneck who never wanted children, was dissected. So was his high school hockey career, and his decision to leave school with graduating to get a job as an apprentice electrician on Alaska’s oil fields.

There were reports that he was being forced into marriage.

“None of that’s true,” he said yesterday. “We both love each other. We both want to marry each other. And that’s what we are going to do.”

He said the couple had been dating for three years. “We were planning on getting married a long time ago with or without the kid,” he said. “That was the plan from the start.”

The wedding will now take place next summer.
